Description

Email Discourse at the Workplace: Power in Language provides a glimpse of email communication at the workplace. It highlighted how emails were used to get things done in organisations. Since organisations consist of people from different levels of work, the emails illustrated how power was manifested, negotiated, and demonstrated in meeting the communicative needs at work. People from various levels communicated using different linguistic features and communicative strategies. The discourse and rhetorical strategies adopted when writing emails depend on the interpersonal relationship of the interactants in the emails. The power in language was illustrated through various linguistic devices. Different examples were discussed to show how the linguistic resources were used to meet different communicative purposes at the workplace. The word choice reflected in the emails show the values people hold in the organizations.
This book provides examples for novice employees, researchers, and students on the language choices in email communication. It guides them on where to begin and how to proceed when communicating via email in the workplace. It also guides the more experienced employees on how to navigate their online communication through the social, cultural and political complexities in the workplace when communicating via email.
