Description
This book portrays the fundamental and applied prospects of various rare earth ions-activated inorganic oxide glasses without and with different metal nanoparticles (MNPs). Recent progress in these glasses, challenges, excitements, applied interests and future research trends are covered. It mainly encompasses the glass composition optimization, detail analyses, role of MNPs localized surface plasmon in the improvement of their overall traits and feasible applications. These functional glasses are useful for the photovoltaics, optical amplifiers, solid state lasers, displays, (bio) sensing, communications, solid-state lighting, waveguides, imaging, optical data transfer, bio-medicine, fiber drawing, self-cleaning, photo-catalyses and so forth. For the practical applications of the conventional glasses, major modifications of their thermal, chemical, structural, morphological, optical, mechanical and physical properties are needed. Yet, diverse nanoglass plasmonic concepts remain unexplored wherein the luminescence enhancement and surface enhanced Raman scattering are the upcoming research avenues. In this perception, the present book is believed to reduce the knowledge gap among the researchers and educationalists dealing with the glasses. This all-inclusive presentation may serve as taxonomy for navigating and understanding the research advancements towards rare earth ions-doped inorganic glasses.
