Inspiring Creative Innovative Minds: Professorial Inaugural Lecture Series 2002–2008 Volume I

This book ia a collection of book chapters derived from presentations made by 31 professors from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) from various fields as part their inaugural professorial lectures spanning from 2002 to 2008. The lectures were delivered as part of the university’s knowledge sharing culture programme. The tradition entails the delivery of lecture by the new professor on his or her expertise in an open forum attended by academics and students from the related faculties as well as from other fields, the industry and the general public. In view of feedback and comments during and after the talk, the original paper was then revised and finally published as a monograph by Penerbit UTM Press, the university publishing house. The monographs were then distributed to participants at the start of the following inaugural professorial talk culminating in the 31 monographs published.
The idea to compile the 31 monographs into a book consisting of three volumes was driven by three main reasons. First, the monographs that came from the inaugural lectures were scarce due to the long duration of time that made them collectors’ item. Not everyone could attend all the 31 inaugural talks and so were interested to have the monographs as reading materials. Since the printed copies were limited and only distributed during the following talks, many were disappointed when they could not get a copy. Newly appointed professors as well as aspiring academics are interested to study the presentations and monographs to prepare for their own inaugural professorial lecture when the time comes. To many others, the professors are now prominent names and their writings certainly are sought after as reference material. Second, many of the professors have progressed further in their careers and are no more with the university. Some have retired, moved to other universities and one of them has even passed away. If no serious effort is made to compile their work then the university would lose in terms of Knowledge Management with no knowledge legacy from the professors of the university. Third, it is a rare occasion to find a book written by professors from very diverse technical backgrounds that also highlights the strength of a university. The book can serve as a reference for those interested to study the contribution and acknowledge the expertise of the professors in UTM besides being a meaningful gift to visitors to the university.
